The general method is: using the percent of burn surface area.
In the total 100% body surface area,
head and neck occupy 9%(head, face and neck occupies 3% separately);
both upper extremities occupy 18%(both upper arms occupy 7%, both forearms occupy 6%, both hands 5%);
body including perineum occupy 27% (fore body occupies 13%, back body occupies 13% and perineum 1%);
both lower extremities (including buttocks) occupy 46%
(both buttocks 5%, both thighs 21%, both legs 13%, both feet 7%)(for
female, both feet and buttocks occupy 6%).
There is one more simple method: the area of the patient’s palm occupies 1% of body surface area.
In clinic, the second degree burn with TBSA=10% or below for adults is called mild burn;
11-30% or third degree burn with TBSA=10% or below is called moderate burn;
31-50% or third degree burn with TBSA=11-20% is called severe burn.
For patients mentioned above, if accompanied with shock, midrange
inhalation damage or other injury, the severity increases one grade.
If the TBSA is larger than 50% or third degree burn with TBSA larger than 20%, it’s called extraordinary severe burn.
